Running: It's actually more expensive than therapy
Saturday 2/24/18 was the Band on the Run 5k in New Smyrna Beach, FL. This race was super inexpensive when I signed up and benefited a great cause (The New Smyrna Beach High School Barracuda Band).
I may not have been in the best shape, but I also felt like I improved since my last race (which was brutal FYI). I told myself I'd be happy with a race under 21 minutes going into it.
Mile 1 6:24
It was a smaller race (around 250 participants or so) and I was able to line up near the front no problem. There weren't any crowd issues at all so it was smooth sailing right away. I had an okay first mile but knew if I went out too fast right off the bat it would be bad so I held back and tried to just maintain.
Mile 2 6:45
This was a flat, out and back course so after we made the turn it was halfway over. The cool thing about this race was the band had students at the water stops play music for us as we passed. Music always pumps me up.
Mile 3 7:09
At least four people passed me on the last mile (not my finest moment for sure). Sure, I was far from my peak fitness level especially on the endurance side that I know. I also know from a strategic standpoint it's better to start off slower, but I do my best when I can maintain my splits. I have decided to check my pace more often especially during the last mile from now on to stay on track better.
Mile .10 5:59
There you go. My goal is always to be in the 5's for the last .10 mile and I achieved it. Doing this also proved that I had energy left, and the bad 3rd mile was mostly mental. My finish video actually looked strong.
This event had great swag for being a smaller, local race. The shirt was long-sleeve and quite comfy. Local vendors donated raffle items which they picked based on bib numbers. My overall award consisted of a medal, custom mug, and a local running store gift card (pretty impressive I must say). Everyone did a really great job at this 5k, and I was happy to support it.
